10. Kalo Minas, Greece

Uploaded by: Granddad Monday March 1, 2010 Kalamata , Greece

The old 'tower house' or castle of the Kapetanakis family stands guard over the tiny village of Charavgi in the outer Mani. It commands a wonderful view down to the Messinian Gulf although this would not have been the prime motivation of the original builders whose ambition was, no doubt, to make an impregnable fortress. These days the romantic ruins are rarely visited although one of the original inhabitants has left his bones mouldering in a concrete sarcophagus on the site. This view, from Charavgi, shows the anemones that colour the olive groves in early spring in this part of Greece. Kalo minas is the traditional greeting on the first of the month. It is a wish for you to 'Have a good month'.
